Nemco have been employed by us for just over 6 years in assisting with the Control of Legionella bacteria in water systems.

The contract disciplines provided by Nemco relate to Initial Risk assessments, collate information for Monthly temperature monitoring, 6 Monthly and Annual inspections of Cold Water Storage Tanks and undertaking Bi Annual risk assessments.

Their management of the contract allows the us to receive reports electronically as well as being supplied with a Monthly report to show our overall level of compliance in relation to ACOPS L8.

Nemco were initially introduced to us to provide Legionella Management Training to site staff and managers. In addition, Nemco were commissioned to complete a review of current practices and produce a Legionella Management Policy. Nemco took over the Legionella Management contract for the 25 sites in September 2010 bringing on board some major improvements in service and cost.

Services include:

  • Legionella risk assessments (every 2 years)
  • Six monthly tank inspections & records audit
  • Remedial work (tank upgrades and deadleg removal)

Prior to Nemco involvement, we were carrying out monthly Legionella sampling and inspecting cold water storage tanks every 3 months upon advice of the previous contractor. Nemco subsequently advised that this was unnecessary and adapted the programme to reflect the requirements of ACOP L8. This meant that tanks were to be inspected at six monthly intervals and sampling only needed to be carried out when “control levels of the treatment regime (e.g. temperature) are not being consistently achieved.” (ACOP L8, para 185 (a))

Further training was provided to staff at the individual sites on how to conduct the monthly temperature checks of the sentinel outlets enabling us to take the tasks in-house and save considerably on contractor costs. The sites were instructed to send in their temperature checks monthly – by doing this it allowed Nemco to act in an auditing capacity, ensuring that each site was completing the monitoring correctly, whilst identifying any potential risk factors, such as a faulty calorifier.

The success of Nemco taking on this contract is quite apparent; not only were Nemco able to identify annual savings of 40% on what we were previously spending on Legionella Management, but more importantly the number of sites who are compliant with ACOP L8 has improved dramatically from only 53% of sites to 100%. Add to this an experienced contract manager and helpful staff and it is easy to see why we, amongst many others, are happy to keep their service with us.
